USDA, ARS Sugarcane Research Unit, Houma, LA

17,000 ft2 greenhouse project for sugarcane research at the Main United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Campus in Houma, Louisianna. A headhouse and adjacent research greenhouse exist on site. This project is an addition to the current facility and will move research from other offsite labs to this new space. Research programs include Breeding, Physiology, Germination, Pathology, Weeds, Cultural Practices, Quarantine, and Entomology, all of which require separation and individual access and control of environmental conditions. The facility is of steel structure and fully tempered low iron glass with 70% haze and anti-reflection coatings for the roof and sidewalls.
The project was designed to allow for construction in three phases as funding becomes available. There are 14 compartments in a mix of sizes from 300 ft2 to 2,940 ft2. The entomology wing is a separate section with a vestibule and two small research compartments with insect screening.
